Surveys/Solutions
Our project managers can design a cabling solution for companies large and small. There are stringent rules for installing CAT5e and CAT6 cabling and we pride ourselves on offering a professional and expert service.
Cat5e
Category 5 was ratified as a standard in the 1990’s. It specified test criteria at a set of signalling frequencies up to 100MHz, which were more than adequate for the commonest transmission application – Fast Ethernet – delivering 100Mbits/sec. In the late 1990’s a more comprehensive set of test criteria were proposed for a higher performance solution.
One feature of the new tests included signalling frequencies up to 250Mhz, and the complete characteristics would be more than adequate to handle Gigabit Ethernet which was emerging at that time. These test criteria formed the basis of Cat6. At the same time work was carried out to enhance the Cat5 standard and this became known as Cat5e.
Cat6/Cat6a
Category 6 cable, commonly referred to as Cat 6, is a cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet and other network Physical Layers that is backward compatible with Cat5e. Compared with Cat 5e, Cat 6 features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet).
Whereas Category 6 cable has a reduced maximum length when used for 10GBASE-T; Category 6a cable, or Augmented Category 6, is characterized to 500 MHz and has improved alien crosstalk characteristics, allowing 10GBASE-T to be run for the same distance as previous protocols.
Cat7
A specification of cable that is still under development.
