How your security systems can be breached

The security of our data has never been more important or more under attack – in recent years massive amounts of time and resource have gone into implementing systems to protect against virus, malware, ransomware, phishing attacks, hacking and so on.

In general these have been very successful and the IT systems of most small and medium businesses are now well protected and security breaches are rare. Only rare though, not non-existent.

When they do occur there is a common theme – someone let the hacker in. Be it a password being compromised, or an email attachment being opened, all the systems we have are powerless if a user opens a door for them.

So what can you do to mitigate this? User education is top of the list – firstly, do not divulge your password to anyone, and don’t use the same one for work that you use on all your private web accounts.

Secondly, when it comes to links and attachments in emails – if in doubt, leave it out! Don’t click on anything you weren’t expecting or didn’t ask for – even if it purports to be from a known contact.

We can assist with providing advice and implementing solutions that address all of the above - if this would be of interest, please give us a call on 0333 344 8443 or via hello@controlandshift.com.
